Aquatic Life Support Systems & Fleet Assistant

Position Summary:  
Assisting with all mechanical equipment and vehicles are maintained throughout the Park, and to also assist with ensuring the operation, maintenance and repairs of the Aquatic Life Support System [ALSS] and its plumbing and other infrastructure is maintained for safe and reliable operation.

General Purpose:   
Under the direction of the Aquatic Life Support Systems & Fleet Manager, must be capable of working on own initiative to perform as an Duties include assisting with overall maintenance of equipment, machines, ALSS and other water treatment systems of the establishment and to keep them in condition suitable for safe operation.  Duties also include assisting with all safety checks and routine maintenance of vehicles. This job will require shift work that may be scheduled outside office hours on any day(s) of the week.  Operate tools and equipment as needed to facilitate various tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with servicing and repairing of all filters & pumps for the ALSS and treatment plant and for the freshwater pool which will include chipping, sanding, priming and painting.
  • Assisting with servicing and repairs of all, valves and valve actuators (both mechanical and electric types) for the supply and circulation of sea water and fresh water.
  • Assisting with repairs of all water treatment plant for freshwater lagoon.
  • Assisting with cleaning and lubricating pump shaft bearings, gears and other parts of machinery when instructed. 
  • Chip, sand, prime and paint equipment when necessary and or instructed.
  • May assist with assembling when instructed and or directed to install, and/or repair pipe systems or plumbing (pipes vary in size from ½” to 14”), machinery and equipment. 
  • Assist with the maintenance of the Seaside Pumping Station, ALSS, and other areas/departments requiring assistance with Hurricane Preparedness. 
  • Assist when instructed with the servicing of valves and all water distribution to ALL turtle tanks ensuring proper water supply and drainage especially during inclement weather.
  • Monitors and reports any deficiencies at the seaside pumps and working with the Supervisor and/or Manager to ensure that during inclement weather conditions including but not limited to Northwesters and Hurricanes with prepping and securing as directed with CTC’s Hurricane Preparedness Plan.
  • May be assigned to take part in monitoring/recording water flow manual readings daily.
  • This position requires assisting with maintenance being conducted over vast areas of the Park, to include any other emergency assigned tasks to ensure the Park always stays operational.
  • Performing any other related duties based on business needs, when necessary.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Related two years’ experience in basic mechanical and/or plumbing repairs as well as painting outdoor equipment and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Knowledge of Computers, Microsoft Office and other related software is beneficial.  
  • Knowledge of basic operational principles of electricity, electrical circuits, electronic equipment, machines and tools, including uses, repair, and maintenance is required.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, safety practices and the tools involved in the repair of mechanical and plumbing equipment.  
  • Demonstrated previous large and small equipment repair experience necessary.
  • Valid Group 2 or above Driver’s license is required and to be maintained throughout employment in this position. 
  • Heavy equipment license would be advantageous.
  • Accountability and Decision Making: The incumbent’s work is directly controlled through the immediate supervision of others.  All deviations from assigned work must be authorized by a person with a higher level of authority within the department, with the Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

  • Must possess acceptable communication and interpersonal skills for interacting and with customers.
  • Satisfactory written and verbal communication skills in the English language when engaging with all levels of staff, clients and guests. 

Impact:
Performing the tasks and requirements of this position has a limited impact beyond the immediate work section. Work is closely controlled through the structured nature of the work itself, routine cross checks, or close supervision of others.  Errors might normally result in (a) the loss of one’s own and other’s time to correct the error, (b) limited safety impacts, damage, waste or financial loss, and/or (c) have an effect on the morale of other employees.  

Complexity:
This position requires limited reasoning and planning in tasks that are straightforward, repetitive and involve different but related processes and methods.  Some creativity and interpretation are required to choose from a limited number of possible solutions and determine the most appropriate course of action.  Considerable procedures and job structure exist, with general job-related instructions. 

Responsibility for Financial/Material Resources:
This position requires moderate responsibility for financial and/or material resources; however, the cost of errors might result in moderate damage, waste, financial loss or liability.  The difficulty, variety, and depth of problems associated with these resources is moderately complex. The incumbent will need to be accountable for all equipment, supplies and inventory resources issued to him/her when in possession with any of these resources.

  • Work environment: Much of this work will be outdoors and occasionally in inclement weather.  This role routinely uses standard maintenance tools and equipment.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at project sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
