Aquatic Life Support Systems & Fleet Technician

Position Summary:
To ensure that all mechanical equipment and vehicles is maintained throughout the Park, and to also ensure the operation, maintenance and repairs of the Aquatic Life Support System [ALSS] and its plumbing and other infrastructure is maintained for safe and reliable operation.

General Purpose:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Under the direction of the Aquatic Life Support Systems & Fleet Lead Technician, must be capable of working on own initiative to perform as a technician and fill in for Aquatic Life Support Systems & Fleet Lead Technician in their absence.  Duties include assisting with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, mechanical repairs, and overall maintenance of equipment, machines, ALSS and other water treatment systems of the establishment and keep them in condition suitable for safe operation.  Duties also include assisting with all safety checks and routine maintenance of vehicles.  Assist in maintaining various records pertaining to the equipment and the operations department.  The Aquatic Life Support Systems & Fleet Technician is required to be on call 24/7 to deal with emergency issues that may arise which could potentially cause a detrimental effect to the operation of Cayman Turtle Center.  This job will require shift work that may be scheduled outside office hours on any day(s) of the week.  Operate tools and equipment as needed to facilitate various tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Service and repair all filters and pumps for the ALSS and treatment plant and for the fresh water pool.
  • Service and repair all pumps, flow sensors, valves and valve actuators (both mechanical and electric types) for the supply and circulation of sea water and fresh water.
  • Service and repair all water treatment plant for fresh water lagoon.
  • Cleans and lubricates pump shaft bearings, gears and other parts of machinery. 
  • Chip, sand, prime and paint equipment when necessary.
  • Inspects and tests machinery and equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and install new or repaired parts.  
  • May assemble, install, and/or repair pipe systems or plumbing (pipes vary in size from ½” to 14”), machinery and equipment. 
  • Maintain an inventory of replacement parts for mechanical equipment, pumps, filters, valves, actuators, etc. 
  • Records repairs made and costs and maintains proper up-to-date files for all related jobs, logged daily.
  • Oversees the Aquatics Park to include the Seaside Pumping Station, ALSS, and other areas/departments requiring assistance with Hurricane Preparedness.  Responsible for this Department’s infrastructure.
  • Service valves and all water distribution to ALL turtle tanks ensuring proper water supply and drainage especially during inclement weather.
  • Monitors the seaside pumps and working with the Lead Technician and Manager ensuring the Seaside Pumping Station is also monitored during inclement weather conditions while ensuring safe operations during weather to include Northwesters and Hurricanes with prepping and securing as directed.
  • Assisting with the repair and general maintenance of pool cleaning and landscaping equipment, e.g. pressure washers, pool scrubbers, lawn mowers, string trimmers, and blowers etc.
  • Will be required to assist, service and/ or repair any of the Center’s equipment to include but not limited to: any of the service vehicles, Bobcat, Telescopic Handler, Utility carts.
  • Will be assigned to take part in monitoring/recording water flow manual readings on a daily basis.
  • This position requires maintenance being conducted over vast areas of the Park, to include any other emergency assigned tasks to ensure the Park always stays operational.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Related or three years’ experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Proficient knowledge of Computers, Microsoft Office and other related software is required.  
  • Previous equipment repair experience necessary.
  • Valid Group 2 or above Driver’s license is required and to be maintained throughout employment in this position. 
  • Heavy equipment license would be advantageous.

Position Responsibilities:
Knowledge of materials, methods, safety practices and the tools involved in the construction or repair of mechanical, plumbing, sewage and drainage, and building systems in houses, buildings, swimming pools, or other structures.   Knowledge of principles of electricity, electrical circuits, electronic equipment, machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

Performing the tasks and requirements of this position has a moderate impact on operations, costs, revenue opportunities, public image, employee engagement, crew member and customer safety and satisfaction, and overall success throughout the Company.  This department accounts for the majority of the Company’s annual capital expenditure including utilities and maintenance costs, so this role is vital in its impact on the Company’s survival and financial success, therefore playing a huge role as being leaders and under the supervision of the Team Leader (CIO) to ensure that CTC’s Hurricane Preparedness Plan is adhered to  

This position requires a limited-moderate degree of creativity in developing solutions and sourcing alternative options for problems that might frequently occur.  A moderate level of reasoning, planning and interpretive skill is required. 

Responsibility for Financial/Material Resources:
This position requires moderate responsibility for financial and/or material resources; however, the cost of errors might result in moderate damage, waste, financial loss or liability.  The crew member will need to be accountable for all equipment, supplies and inventory resources when in possession with any of these resources.

  • Work environment: Much of this work will be outdoors and occasionally in inclement weather.  This role routinely uses standard maintenance tools and equipment.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at project sites.  The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
