July 8 , 2014…… It’s been a busy nesting season thus far for 2014 at the Cayman Turtle Centre: Island Wildlife Encounter.
The first nest of the 2014 Turtle Centre Nesting Season was laid on April 23rd 2014, compared to March 17th in 2013. As of June 30th 2014, a total of 61 breeding female turtles had crawled out of the Breeding Pond at night. Following their instinct to reproduce, they laid 14,979 eggs in 179 nests.
The first turtle hatchlings of the 2014 season actually emerged on the Breeding Pond nesting beach on 28 April 2014. These “strays” very likely emerged from an undetected early season nest, possibly laid in early March.
The first hatchlings from this season’s eggs being incubated in the Turtle Hatchery emerged in late June 2014.
The 2014 season still has a long way to go. Stay tuned for further news and updates later in the season.
