Turtle on the Menu
04May 2012

As the islands’ population increased and the local turtle population reached critically low levels, it became obvious the Caymanians’ taste for turtle would soon go unfulfilled unless a solution to meet demand, while also being more environmentally friendly, was found. That solution finally came in 1968, when Mariculture, Ltd., was founded with the goal of becoming the world’s only commercially viable sea turtle Centre. Today, The Cayman Turtle Centre not only meets the islands’ demand for turtle meat, but also helps restore and protect the wild turtle population by reducing poaching, conducting marine research and regularly releasing Centre-raised turtles into the sea in an attempt to replenish the local population.
