One of the biggest threats to sea turtles is plastic waste in the ocean. Sea turtles consume plastic in the wild that they mistake for jellyfish and can also get entangled in discarded plastic while swimming in the ocean or crawling up a nesting beach. If the current patterns continue, there will be more plastic waste in our oceans than fish by 2050, putting the sea turtles and other marine life even more at risk for injury and death.
At Cayman Turtle Centre, we have taken Plastic Free Cayman’s “345 Pledge” as we work to eliminate single-use plastics across the park. In addition, for the past few years the Centre has been advocating our own “Three Plastics a Day” pledge with local schools and at every turtle release: The simple habit of picking up three pieces of plastic a day can make a big difference in reducing the pollution impact if we all join in. Please join us in doing your part to stop plastic waste from polluting our oceans and threatening our marine wildlife.
Pledge to be an honorary Turtle Ranger with Shellby and their friends by vowing to pick up at least three pieces of trash a day!
