WHERE IS CAYMAN TURTLE CENTRE LOCATED?

Cayman Turtle Centre is located on the northwest tip of Grand Cayman in the district of West Bay, just eight miles from George Town. On the way, visitors are treated to the scenic vista of the world-famous Seven Mile Beach as well as authentic Caymanian architecture.

AM I ABLE TO CHANGE MY TICKET AFTER PURCHASING?

Unfortunately, we’re not able to make edits to your existing reservation but rest assured that your ticket is transferrable to other dates. Please feel free to come along on the date of your choice and present your ticket and photo ID at the Box Office. There is plenty of room at our Centre for everyone so no need to worry about tickets being sold out. 

DO YOU OFFER REFUNDS IF WE ARE UNABLE TO VISIT?

If you pre-book on our website and are unable to visit us, we would be happy to process a full refund for you. Please ensure that you contact our Customer Service team via email to info@turtle.ky within 30 days of your reservation date. 

DO YOU OFFER TRANSPORTATION FROM THE CRUISE PORT?

We don’t offer transportation from the pier, but multiple transport options are easily accessible to you upon arrival at the Royal Watler terminal. We recommend that you either take a taxi or use our Public Bus system as it’s about 20-25 minutes’ drive from the pier to the Cayman Turtle Centre. 

 

Taxis are available right outside the pier for a cost of US$10-$20 per person one-way. You can arrange with the taxi that brings you to the Centre for a return pick up or feel free to ask at the customer service desk and we will be happy to call one for you. 

 

There is also a public bus stop right outside the pier, as well as along the Seven Mile Beach area, which can drop you off and pick you up at Cayman Turtle Centre. The main bus terminal is 5 minutes' walk from the pier and is located adjacent to the George Town Public Library, cost per person is $2.50 US one-way.  

WHAT ADDITIONAL SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE?

Lockers are available at the check-in desk for US$20 (cash only) which includes a US$10 deposit. The deposit of US$10 will be refunded once the key and lock are returned. 

 

Life vests are mandatory to wear in our snorkel lagoon and rental of these is included in your ticket price. Basic snorkel gear (mask and snorkel) is also included. You can upgrade to a full-face snorkel mask for US$4. 

 

Towels are not included in our packages, so we recommend that you bring your own. If you forget your towel, you can always purchase a new one (as a memento of your trip) at our Splash gift store.  

HOW LONG HAS THE CENTRE BEEN IN OPERATION?

The Cayman Turtle Centre first opened its doors in 1968 and has evolved from a small commercial business to one of the world’s leading organisations in Green sea turtle research and conservation.

HOW MANY TURTLES HAS THE CENTRE RELEASED INTO THE OCEAN?

The Cayman Turtle Centre has released over 34,000 turtles since 1979.

HOW CAN YOU TELL A FEMALE FROM A MALE TURTLE?

It is difficult to tell male and female turtles apart until they reach adolescence at about 7 years. At this stage, males typically develop much longer tails than females. There are no other obvious visible differences to be able to tell the gender of a turtle.

WHAT IS THE BREEDING SEASON FOR GREEN SEA TURTLES?

The breeding season is from April to late September.

HOW MANY EGGS CAN A FEMALE GREEN SEA TURTLE LAY?

A female turtle can lay 80-120 eggs at a time in a single nest, which is a hole they dig deep into the sand on the beach. Wild turtles can lay anywhere between 50 to 200 eggs and 3-5 clutches, but our breeder turtles at the Centre may lay as often as 10 times in one season.

HOW LONG DO TURTLE EGGS TAKE TO HATCH?

After eggs are laid, there is an incubation period of approximately 50-60 days before they hatch.

HOW LONG CAN A TURTLE HOLD ITS BREATH?

When it is active, a sea turtles will breathe air roughly every minute when swimming at the surface and every 15 – 30 minutes when submerged. When a sea turtle is sleeping, it can hold its breath for 7 – 8 hours.

WHY ARE THESE TURTLES CALLED “GREEN TURTLES” WHEN THEY HAVE BROWN AND BLACK SHELLS?

Green sea turtles are named for their body fat, which is dark green due to their daily diet and genetic composition.
