March 18th marks Global Recycling Day, a time to reflect on how we can better manage waste and protect our environment. In the Cayman Islands, recycling is more than just a responsible choice—it’s essential for preserving our beautiful land and waters for future generations. Whether you're a long-time recycler or just getting started, here’s how you can contribute to a greener Cayman.
At Cayman Turtle Centre (CTC), conservation, education, research, and sustainability are at the forefront of everything we do. Protecting the environment is key to preserving the natural habitats of the incredible wildlife in our care. That’s why we support recycling and sustainability efforts in the Cayman Islands.
We have Junk recycling receptacles open to the public at Cayman Turtle Centre, making it easy to dispose of recyclables properly. To reduce plastic waste, we use aluminum cans instead of plastic water bottles, sell reusable water bottles and straws, and use biodegradable plastic cups made from corn, bamboo and sugarcane where necessary in our food and beverage areas. By making these small but impactful changes, we hope to inspire others to reduce their environmental footprint.
To celebrate Global Recycling Day, we have collected information from various sources, including Cayman Compass, Cayman Resident, Junk, the Department of Environmental Health, and more, to create a comprehensive guide to recycling.
Across Grand Cayman, residents can recycle clean glass, plastic, cardboard, metal cans, tins, and trays at several convenient drop-off locations:
Junk is Cayman’s only full-service dry goods recycling business, handling aluminum and tin cans, cardboard, glass, and plastics (types 1, 2, and 5). They also recycle car and small batteries, used printer cartridges, and electronic waste. Junk actively educates the community and has launched initiatives like “Keep it Clean Cayman” to reduce litter.

Recyclables are safely stored at landfills before being shipped to Grand Cayman for processing. Once at the George Town landfill recycling facility, materials are sorted, baled, and shipped to the US for further recycling.
Follow these essential recycling guidelines to ensure your efforts are effective:
1. No Plastic Bags!
Plastic bags cause machinery issues at recycling plants. Instead, use reusable canvas bags and drop off unwanted plastic bags at designated collection points.
2. Small Items Are Big Problems
Items smaller than a credit card—like straws, bottle caps, and paper clips—can jam sorting machines. Keep bottle caps attached to bottles to ensure proper recycling.
3. Keep It Clean, Empty, and Dry
Food residue contaminates recyclables. Rinse and dry all items before placing them in recycling bins.
4. Avoid Mixed Materials
Items made of multiple materials (like plastic-coated coffee cups) are non-recyclable. Opt for products that can be fully recycled.
5. Know Your Plastics
Plastics labeled 1 and 2 are widely recyclable, but higher numbers can be tricky. Check local recycling guidelines before disposing of plastic items.
6. Don’t Wishcycle
Putting non-recyclable items in recycling bins can contaminate loads and send everything to the landfill. If in doubt, leave it out!
7. Educate Yourself & Spread Awareness
Check local recycling guidelines, learn best practices, and encourage others to participate in recycling efforts.
Recycling is just one part of sustainable living. Consider getting involved in community initiatives, advocating for better waste management, and embracing the ‘Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ mindset.
Every action counts! By recycling correctly, we can significantly reduce waste, conserve resources, and keep the Cayman Islands pristine. Let’s make every day a recycling day!
